Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) has once again demonstrated its social investment commitment by assisting the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the celebration of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, observed every May 3.
The company presented a cash amount of GHC10,000, and assorted products to support the event, which would be marked with a flag raising ceremony.
Every year, the World Press Freedom Day celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluates press freedom around the world and defend the media from attacks on their independence while paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
The global theme for this year’s celebration is: “Let Journalism Thrive! Towards Better Reporting, Gender Equality & Media Safety in the Digital Age”.
Accra Brewery has been supporting the World Press Freedom Day celebration in Ghana for the past seven years; constructing an outdoor browse house for the centre and providing funds for its beautification during the last election.
Corporate Affairs Manager of Accra Brewery Limited, Mr Cyrus deGraft-Johnson, said ABL as a corporate entity believed in the ideals of press freedom and freedom of expression.
“We believe these are human rights that when applied responsibly, would promote dialogue, healthy debate and consensus-building, which are critical to peaceful development. These are values that should be upheld by the Ghanaian media without compromise,” he said.
Mr deGraft-Johnson congratulated the Ghanaian media for their efforts in ensuring media responsibility, adding; "the sponsorship is a sign of encouragement and solidarity for the GJA."
Mr Affail Monney, the President of the GJA, commended ABL for its continued support describing it as an annual ritual of goodwill.
