President John Mahama has nominated the Sole Commissioner on Judgment Debts, Justice Yaw Appau to the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court.

He also nominated former General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Mr. Gabriel Pwamang, to the court.

Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho announced this in Parliament Tuesday morning.

Parliamentary correspondent, Elton John Brobbey reported the Appointments Committee of Parliament will now invite the nominees and vet them.

It is after vetting that the House will determine whether the nominees qualify to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Justice Appau is currently a Court of Appeal judge.

He was appointed chairman of the Commission investigating judgment debts payments by President Mahama when the issue of questionable judgment and settlement payments became topical.

Justice Appau is reputed to be a no-nonsense person and this showed up pretty much during the sittings of the Judgment Debt Commission which investigate inordinate payments to organisations and individuals on the basis of claims against the state.

The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Nene Amegatcher, recently expressed concern about a growing trend where the President appoints judges to sit on commissions of inquiry and subsequently elevates them to higher position on the Bench.

He was concerned that if not properly regulated, this could blur the lines between the Executive arm of government and the judiciary.

That, however hasn't affected the nomination of Justice Appau.

Mr. Pwamang is a respected private legal practitioner and is Managing Partner at Pwamang & Associates.
