Farmer based groups and other Civil Society Organisations will on Saturday storm Asutuare, a farming community in the Eastern Region with a protest march against the GM Seed producing company Monsanto.
The event will be held concurently with similar ones taking place in more than 68 other countries across the world.
This year’s march will be led by The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, the General Agricultural Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress, the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organisational Development and the Agriculture Sovereignty Ghana.
Mr Ben Guri, Chairperson of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) is expected to put the weight of the pan African body behind the march.
Madam Victoria Adongo, Programmes Coordinator of the PFAG disclosed at a strategic meeting that barring any unforeseen circumstances, Ghanaian peasant farmers and their allies are ready to send the clearest signal of their resolve to resist the corporate theft of seed by giant multinational seed companies with the active connivance of local agents.
According to her the invasion of the country and Africa with programmes of the G8 and the World Bank that promises to lift a million farmers out of poverty is only a cover up for what is a well organized scheme to subject African peoples to a new form of dependency and the deepening of the poverty of the people.
