The vigilance and timely reaction of security officers and the Police successfully foiled an attempt by two men to rob the Silverbird Cinema at the West Hills Mall at Dunkonah, near Weija on Sunday.
The West Hills Mall Management yesterday confirmed that ground security officers apprehended and neutralized two young men, identified by the Police as Sulley Jary, 24, unemployed and Steven Ayoma, a shoemaker, after they attacked the cinema’s technical operator in the projection room of one of the five cinema halls, shooting him in the arm during a scuffle.
The sound of the gunshot was not heard outside as all the halls are sound insulated but the cinema’s operations director, Mr. Albert Mensah, who chanced on the incident was hit on the side of his head with a blunt implement suspected to be the butt of a gun and was momentarily rendered unconscious.
Upon regaining consciousness, he ran out of the hall and raised an alarm, alerting ground security officers who immediately rushed to the location and called in a standby police detail from the Weija Police command.
As the Security men and the police closed in on the two assailants, they hid their gun on the air extractor in the Hall and tried to blend in with customers and visitors, many of whom had heard the alarm and were converging in the lobby.
The two men were however identified and rounded up with ease and were detained in a holding room to keep them out of reach of angry visitors and were subsequently placed in police custody at the Weija District Police Command.
Mr. Bernard Denkyi, Operations Manager at the Mall, told newsmen later that the robbery attempt is an isolated incident. He pointed out that it proves how effective the mall’s security network is and underscores the level of partnership the Mall has with the local Police Command.
Meanwhile, as if nothing had happened, long queues started building up at the hallway of Silverbird cinema just hours after the incident as movie-lovers streamed in to purchase tickets to watch their favourite movies.
