Police in the Northern Region are pressing a charge of stealing and causing unlawful damage against 28 students of the Nalerigu Senior High School who are in their custody.
The students were arrested after they went on rampage destroying several school properties and stealing a number of computers belonging to the school.
The riot was as a result of the refusal of school authorities to allow them to have their jam before exams. It was advised that the jam is postponed until they are done with their examinations but the students would none of that, according to the police.
The students were infuriated the more when the school experienced power cut Saturday evening whilst they were gearing up for the jam and therefore went on rampage.
The school has since been closed down and the students asked to go home.
ASP Ebenezer Tetteh who confirmed the incident to Joy News said two are being held for stealing and the rest for causing damage.
This is the fourth case of students rioting in schools in the Northern Region. It started with Salaga, followed by Karaga and then Bimbilla.
Meanwhile, Educationist Michael Nsowah has charged education authorities to investigate the root causes of student riots in the region.
For him, it was "childish" for the students of Nalerigu SHS to embark on destruction because they have been asked to postpone an entertainment programme.
“It is not good enough for them to take the law into your own hand,” the former director of the Ghana Education Service remarked.
He charged school authorities to be firm in instilling discipline, otherwise, “we are going to have problems on our hand” if he students are allowed to do what they want.
