Ashanti Regional Minister Kofi Opoku Manu has called on sub-metropolitan district councils to be accountable to win the people's support for accelerated socio-economic development.
He also asked councilors to operate according to the law, denouncing misunderstanding, clashes and power struggle among some officials of councils, a situation, he said, affected implementation of projects.
Mr Opoku-Manu made the call in an address read on his behalf at a two-day orientation workshop for councilors of the Kumasi sub-metropolitan councils, in Kumasi.
It was jointly organized by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Zirmacon Multi-Consult Limited to educate the 300 participants on the statutes and sub-legal instruments.
Mr Opoku-Manu called for regular training for councilors to enable them to work effectively.
Mr Samuel Sarpong, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of KMA, said the assembly was determined to promote grassroots participation to give meaning to the decentralization policy.
He said the assembly would strengthen the structures of the councils and provide logistics to enhance performance in environmental sanitation and revenue mobilization.
Dr Samuel Kwadwo Asibuo, Senior Lecturer - Department of Public Administration and Health Services, University of Ghana, said the workshop was a bold effort by the KMA to improve the capacity of the sub-structures to support the Assembly to function effectively.
