Scores of traders who ply their trade at the Novotel Park in Accra stormed the seat of government Friday to protest their imminent ejection the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).Their demonstration to the Castle was necessitated by AMA information vans on Friday indicating that by Sunday, May 23, they would be relocated.The traders had early on indicated that they would march to the Castle naked; however their leaders indicated that they had to rescind their decision as a sign of respect to the Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashitey, who has been fighting in their corner.They were received at the Castle by a delegation led by Deputy Chief of Staff Dr Valerie Sawyer who promised to address their concerns.The traders reported that they were told by some AMA officials that it was the President, John Mills who had instructed that they should be ejected forcibly.The traders, clad in red, called on the Presidency to intervene to ensure that their livelihood is protected.They were of the view that they would not resist any ejection if an appropriate alternative is made available to them.Dr Valerie Sawyer promised to relay their concerns to the president and asked the group to constitute their leadership so they could visit the Odawna Market where authorities plan to relocate them, to ascertain its suitability.Meanwhile, the Minister of State at the Presidency, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo told Citi News the Presidency would not allow the eviction to happen on Sunday May 23, if the market women are not appropriately relocated.Source: Citi FM
