The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of Ghana Police Service has organised a competition on domestic violence for pupils from some basic schools in Accra Metropolis.
The programme which was collaborated by Projects Abroad Human Rights Office (PAHO), a non-governmental organisation on Thursday was meant at creating awareness of domestic violence among children throughout the country and assess the extent to which they would understand and know their rights regarding domestic violence.
Two pupils from the six schools participated in the first competition.
The schools were Mamprobi 1, 2, and 4, Mamprobi Salvation Army A and B and Mamprobi Ebenezer Primary.
Master Michael Mensah and Ms Rebecca Ansare from Salvation Army A School emerged winners and received GH¢100 and a set of stationery. There were consolation prizes for other contestants.
Addressing the contestants, Police Chief Inspector Irene Oppong, Public Relations Officer of DOVSU noted that most parents did not educate their children on issues relating to domestic violence which had made them victims to all forms of abuses.
She said authorities of DOVVSU had undertaken a number of sensitisation programmes among parents on domestic violence, but expressed concern that children were always left in the educational drive.
Chief Inspector Oppong said the competition would offer children the opportunity to be aware of all forms of abuses against them and report to the appropriate authorities whenever their rights were violated.
She said the competition would be organised in all communities in the country.
