The Suhum District Magistrate Court on Friday convicted a 36-year-old corn- miller, James Amuzu, to a fine of GHc 240 or in default spend six months in prison with hard labour for committing environmental offense.
Amuzu was charged with unsanitary conduct around his corn mill, creating offensive odour and polluting the environment.
The Prosecutor, Principal Environmental Officer, Mr Billo Shacco, told the court, presided over by Ms Kokuvie Tay, that Amuzu on a number of occasions has been advised to keep his surrounding and workshop clean but failed to heed the advise.
He said on May 28, an Environmental Health Inspector, Mr Stephen Asante on his normal rounds entered the premises of Amuzu and detected the offence.
The prosecutor said when Amuzu was questioned why he failed to keep the place tidy he became offended and started insulting the environmental Health Inspector.
He was therefore summoned to appear before the court but failed and a bench warrant was therefore issued for his arrest.
