A human rights activist, Nana Oye Lithur says the National Security Council must take action on the rampant reports of military brutalities in the country. She said to attack police officers at a police station and vandalise state property as happened in Kumasi at the week-end, was a serious security issue that should attract the full attention of the managers of the country’s security. Nana Oye Lithur was reacting to media reports that soldiers went on the rampage in Kumasi attacking policemen. She also called on the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the police to take serious action on the conduct of the soldiers. She was not happy that nothing has so far come out from the numerous investigations the military command has always promised to conduct whenever an issue bordering on the misconduct of men in uniform comes up. “I don’t know whether they investigate these cases but obviously even if they do, it has been very ineffective because if you read the Daily Graphic report – which is very comprehensive – you find out that it [was] a free-for-all fight between police and soldiers, with the soldiers on the side of brutalizing [the police],” she said. Nana Oye Lithur, who is the Regional Co-ordinator of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), rejected assertions that the issue was of a sensitive nature because it involved the military. “What is sensitive about this?" she asked, arguing that “this is a security situation where you have soldiers who have been trained in a certain way to maintain law and order and to protect our territory from external attack actually causing mayhem right in the heart of our country.
