A Council of State member is seeking to woo his colleagues to join in a campaign to advise the president to consider, rather seriously, the issue of homosexuality gaining grounds in the society.
Reverend Dr. Nii Amo Darko has warned that Ghanaians will incur the wrath of God if homosexuality is not checked.
Even though legally and morally, the Ghanaian society frowns on same sex sexual relations, there have been several reports of gays and lesbians organizing clandestine events in some parts of the country.
Rev. Amo Darko, in an interview with Luv FM’s Elton John Brobbey, expressed surprise by how gay clubs are springing up in the country, and said the situation calls for immediate government attention to curb it.
His appeal comes in the wake of last week’s protest march by the Muslim community in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, with support from some concerned groups. The protestors presented a petition to the regional minister on the gays activities to be forwarded to the president for action.
The Council of State member blamed the situation on societal breakdown and invasion of Western cultures on local norms.
He said the meeting with the president would deliberate on what actually the laws of Ghana state on homosexuality and the criminal aspects of the practice.
He feared that if the activities of the gays are not checked, they could speed up the spread of HIV/AIDs in the country. He however acknowledged the rights of people to associate with whatever groups they desire.
