Superintendent Mrs Debora Addison-Campbell of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police, says no amount of driver education can minimise fatal road accidents.
She said the remedy to the situation rested in the hands of the drivers themselves.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the attitude of some drivers, she wondered whether “drivers need the presence of heavy policemen at vantage points on the roads to do the right thing.”
She said until the drivers realised that flouting basic driving regulations such as jumping red light, unnecessary overtaking, over-speeding, over-loading, and leaving broken down vehicles unattended without warming signs were all driving offences, the problems would still persist on the roads.
Mrs Addison-Campbell called on drivers to guard against drinking alcohol, as well as driving when exhausted, and reminded them that since the lives of the travelling public lay in their hands, they should take time off to rest when tired.
She expressed the hope that through the collaborative efforts of social partners, especially the transport unions, the carnage would at least minimise this year on the roads.
