Students of the Catholic Social Advance Institute in Accra on Thursday, July 22, embarked on a demonstration against the intended relocation of the school to the Martyrs of Uganda Premises in Accra. The students claim the place for the school’s relocation does not have the adequate academic facilities to cater for them. The intended relocation, believed to be orchestrated by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Gabriel Palmer Buckle had earlier been opposed by the Parent Teacher Association of the school who vowed to use any means possible to destroy the plan and also resist “any attempt to victimize anybody”. Most Rev Palmer-Buckle had earlier been ‘shit-bombed’ at Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Church in Mamprobi, ostensibly over the movement of the school to the area. By the arrangement of the Archbishop, the secondary department of the school is expected to be relocated to Martyrs of Uganda in Mamprobi while the primary section will be moved to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Arena. Speaking to Citi News, some of student protesters said the new place is not conducive to their academic progress due to the frequent death threats and other inconveniences at the place. They have thus called on the government to come to their aid. “There have been several death threats on our lives by the Catholic Resistance Movement who claim to be known as the ‘hit squad’. We all know that hit squad is made up of people who are ready to kill. How can the Archbishop Palmer Buckle, a whole man of God, force we poor children to go to a place that is not safe…If a whole Bishop was shit bombed, how much more we the ordinary students? “We want the whole public to know that we are not moving an inch to Martyrs of Uganda and the Sacred Heart. We are much disappointed, shocked and surprised that a whole man of God wants to ruin our future.” They lamented. The Social Advance Institute was established in 1964 by a German social worker, Dr. Helga Kleinkowski, with sponsorship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF), a German political NGO, to give academic and vocational training to street and vulnerable children in Ghana. Dr. Kleinkowski retired from active service in 1979 and handed the school to the Accra Diocese of the Catholic Church, and in 2004, the church changed the name to Catholic Social Advance Institute.
