Vice President John Dramani Mahama will Thursday meet executives of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) over concerns raised by the two groups following the increase in utility tariffs by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). The meeting is a follow-up to high-level meetings of government chaired by the Vice President to discuss and consider various options aimed at addressing the concerns of consumers. The two groups have been unimpressed with the hikes announced some few months ago and are demanding a reversal. A statement signed by Information Minister John Tia Akologu, said the Thursday meeting will enable the Vice President present to Ghanaians government’s position on their concerns. Government, a few weeks ago, urged the PURC and the utility companies to urgently meet and consider what government sees as legitimate concerns raised by organised labour and manufacturers about the recently implemented utility tariffs. It urged the PURC, to especially take a second look at the increases applied to the non-residential and commercial consumers’ category.
