Domestic Tourism on The Increase

GHANA earned 64 million dollars through domestic tourism in April last year as against 52 million dollars in the same month in 2005. The increase in the total receipt from domestic tourism is an indication that the sector is gaining increasing patronage, the Acting Executive Director of Ghana Tourist Board (GTB), Mr. Martin Mireku, has said. He was speaking at a meeting of officials of GTB and tour operators in the country last Friday in Accra. Mr. Mireku said a lot more Ghanaians were visiting tourist sites in the country and urged tour operators, hotels, car rental companies and others in the sector to raise the standard of their activities to attract more patronage. He also urged the private sector to take advantage of the boom to invest more in the sector. The acting Executive Director reminded the tour operators that April was the peak period for tourist arrivals and urged them to get themselves in readiness for the work ahead. He said the statistics available show that in April 2005, there were a total of 24,976 arrivals out of which 17,456 were Ghanaians and 7,507 foreigners. In September, he said, Ghana recorded 117,246 tourist arrivals with 77, 218 being Ghanaians. Mr. Mireku who was obviously excited about the figures assured the operators of GTB’s cooperation and urged them to improve upon the services and to ensure that they renew their licenses. Spectator
