Officials of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) have intercepted cartridges on a Tamale-Gushegu bound passenger Benz bus at Gulugu near Gushegu in the Northern Region.
The reports, though sketchy, have it that the BNI in Gushegu accosted the said Benz bus upon a tip off and took away the cartridges in large quantities without arresting the owner.
One Murtala Fatogm, a resident of Tamale based in Gushegu claimed ownership of the cartridges.
The driver, Mr. Fuseini confirmed that Murtala was carrying the items but did not disclose to him what they were.
Peace loving residents of Gushegu are accusing the police of not arresting Murtala Fatogm because he is perceived to be a known NDC youth activist in the area.
The Gushegu NPP Chairman Alhaji Issifu Sumani Joe suspecting political undertones the case is calling for the immediate arrest of the suspect.
He demands that Murtala Fatogm be arrested and transferred to Yendi for fear that the suspect might be released on political grounds.
Some members of an NDC youth group which the suspect is a member, are alleged to have stormed the BNI office in Gushegu in protest against the seizure of the cartridges.
When contacted, Hon. Fuseini Alhassan, DCE for Gushegu who was in Tamale attending the Constitutional Review Commission’s regional consultative meeting said he was informed about the incident but was yet to obtain the facts.
He however regretted that certain individuals have read political meanings into the matter rather than allowing the police to conclude its investigations.
