Robbers for love nabbed

"My fiancée gave me an ultimatum to perform our marriage ceremony or else she leaves me for another man. Since I love my woman and would not want to leave her for another woman, I decide to go on a robbery spree to get quick money for the engagement of my love." These were the words of 28-year-old Mustapha Ibin Asmiu, who was nabbed together with Kwame Owusu a.k.a Nana Kwame for robbery by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command. Mustapha Ibin Asmiu confessed to the police that he loves his girl so much that he cannot afford to lose her, adding "the best way to keep my woman is to get quick money for the marriage ceremony to be performed as soon as possible." He said he had just gotten a new job but his lady was not willing to wait for him for another year. Mustapha, together with Kwame Owusu, also 28 years, were grabbed by the police at the Aladjo police snap checkpoint after the two succeeded in snatching five taxi cabs from their drivers some days ago, which they intended to sell. Briefing Daily Guide, Superintendent Frank Adufati, Police Regional Crime Officer, indicated that on July 22, 20 I 0, at about 3am, the two hired a Geo Prism taxi with registration number OW 6162U from Airport to Darkuman. Upon reaching Dzorwulu, the two men pulled out knives and forcefully snatched the car from the driver and sped off. The matter was reported to the Kotobabi Police Station, where a description of the armed robbers was given. The two hired another taxi, a KIA Pride with registration number GE 2506610 on August 1, 2010 at about 2:30 am from Circle to Dzorwulu plant pool. When they got to CP round-about, the two pulled out a locally made pistol, ordered the driver to get out of the car and sped off. Mr. Adufati noted that the two used the same tactics to seize three extra taxis cabs, making it a total of five cars snatched. "The others included a Tata Indigo with registration number GR 7925-09, which was also snatched at Abelemkpe on August 5, 2010, by the two." The fourth and fifth taxis, with registration numbers GR9953 and GC3830-09, were seized on August 8 and 9 at Dzorwulu plant pool and Aladjo respectively. Superintendent Adufati reiterated that the two were however arrested when the police intercepted them at a snap checkpoint at Aladjo around I :55am on August 9,2010. He said that when they were searched, a knife, gun and an electrical wire were found, adding that "the gun was hidden under a seat in 'the taxi whiles the knife was found in the pocket of Nana Owusu, together with the wire." Upon interrogation, Nana Owusu confessed that he needed money to support the wife and their newborn baby who often fell sick. Mustapha Ibin also confessed that he needed money to marry his girlfriend who had given him an ultimatum to either per form the marriage rites as soon as possible or forget about the relationship. The regional crime officer said the police managed to retrieve all the taxi cabs robbed by the two and assured the public that the police would continue to do their best to bring down criminal activities in the country.
