The Takoradi market circle was last Saturday virtually turned upside down when the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo paid a surprise visit to the area.
Nana Addo visited the market circle after attending the funeral rites of the wife of the Western Regional Secretary of the NPP, Kurentsir Sam, at Anaji near Takoradi over the weekend.
People from all walks of life including some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flooded the market circle to catch a glimpse of the man tipped to be the country's next president.
Hundreds of enthusiastic people followed Nana Addo's convoy all the way from Anaji to the Takoradi central business district.
Party members and supporters who had stood, hours before Nana's arrival struggled to either touch, hug or shake hands with arguably the most popular man in Ghana today, amidst shouts of here comes President Nana Akufo-Ado', and here comes the man who has struggled to make the NPP what it is today',
With the level of excitement and accompanying, brass band music, one would have mistaken the event to be a mammoth political rally.
Nana Addo, who virtually walked through the, Takoradi market, attracted loads of NPP supporters and sympathizers as well as members of the general public.
His arrival at the market sparked a spontaneous jubilation by the traders, most of whom followed him throughout his tour, some simply to touch him and others to hug him or whisper a few words of encouragement and assurances into his ears.
When he finally spoke, the NPP flagbearer explained that he was at the market circle after attending the funeral, to thank the people of Takoradi for supporting him in his campaign prior to the August 7 NPP presidential primary.
He also used the opportunity to thank all delegates and party sympathizers for the love and support shown him during his tour of the Western region and promised to come hack some other time.
He indicated that whether the country would continue to stagnate as it is happening under the NDC or move forward, would largely depend on the decision that the electorate would make come December 7, 2012.
He intimated that he however had confidence in the people and knew that they would make the right choice in the country's next general elections.
Nana Addo later visited the Sekondi market where the story was the same. Party supporters met him on his way and ushered him into the market with the same chorus: 'Nana our next president’.
