A 27-year-old soldier who attempted to rob a student of 280 Ghana Cedis at Nima in Accra was on Thursday sentenced to 18 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for attempted robbery. The court found Lance Corporal Imoro Ibrahim guilty and acquitted and discharged his accomplice Raymond Ntiri, a 28-year-old soldier. Prosecution’s case was that the complainant Patrick Essuman resides at Nima an Accra suburb while the accused persons were all stationed at 48 Field Engineering Regiment based at Teshie Camp. On March 7, this year, at about 3:00 pm, the complainant withdrew the money from a bank and boarded a taxi to Nima. Prosecution said on the way near the Nima Police Station, the accused persons in military uniform on board another taxi stopped the complainant’s taxi and started dragging him into a waiting taxi. He said while the complainant was being dragged, Ibrahim tried to remove the money from his pocket, during which he started shouting for help which attracted some people including a policemen to the scene. The prosecution said the complainant and the accused persons were sent to the Nima Police Station and during a search, a dagger was found on Ntiri. He said Ntiri and Ibrahim in their statements to the Police alleged that they boarded a taxi from Agbogboloshie towards Teshie Camp, and on reaching a traffic light a certain boy ran to them saying that the complainant on board the other taxi was a criminal. The prosecution said with this information, they allegedly chased the complainant and apprehended him with the intention of escorting him to the Police station. Source: GNA
