The government through the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) is to establish a permanent road maintenance and vigilant team to constantly repair the country's roads. The programme, which will be rolled out next month, will initially create employment for 1,000 youths in each of the 10 regions. It is also a move to build the capacity as well as sharpen the skills of hundreds of youth who studied engineering at the tertiary levels. The project which is labour-intensive programme is part of the government's "Better Ghana" agenda tailored at creating jobs for the people, particularly the youth. A Deputy Minister of Information, Mr James Agyenim-Boateng, told the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday that the government had spent $1 billion in the past five years on road construction and maintenance. He said the government did not believe in a situation whereby the roads would be allowed to deteriorate beyond repairs before taking action.
