The Treasurer of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr Bonaventure Anane-Queba, has been accused of forging the signature of the NUGS President, Mr Wonder Madilo, which enabled him to withdraw GH¢23,000 belonging to the union. The money was withdrawn from the Ring Road Central branch of the Agriculture Development Bank (ADB). The withdrawal was detected when Mr Madilo went to the bank to transact business last Friday. He has consequently reported the matter to the Nima Police and complained formally to the branch Manager of the bank. In a letter to the bank, a copy of which was made available to the Daily Graphic, Mr Madilo said "I write to strongly protest to a signature purported to be mine for the withdrawal of GH0 23,000 (twenty-three thousand Ghana cedis only) on account No 1011000110198". According to the letter, the said amount was withdrawn on September 1, 2010, but the date on the cheque presented to him (Madilo) by the staff of the bank indicated the said cheque was signed on August 23, 2010. "The activity is a criminal one and I call on your good office to rectify the anomaly with immediate effect," he said. Mr Anane-Queba, however, insisted that the President signed an open cheque and asked him to check on the amount in the account in the bank before the withdrawal. He said he disbursed the amount in question and has receipts covering all the payments he made. He said the President might have been aggrieved because, he made the payments without him being present and maintained that they had at all times collected cash from the bank and he as the Treasurer made payments and accounted for such withdrawals. However, Mr Madilo maintained that he never signed the cheque in question and would not have signed a cash cheque to that tune. When contacted, Mr Thomas Prempeh, the CID in charge, confirmed the complaint by the NUGS President and said his outfit had launched investigations into the case. Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
