The Police administration has described as baseless and unfounded demands by the pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance, for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye.Rather than making such demands, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Kwasi Ofori told Joy News’ Bernard Saibu that political parties need to soul-search and purge themselves of wrong doings during elections.AFAG Tuesday called for the immediate resignation of the IGP, citing the recent violence that characterized the Atiwa by-election.According to the pressure group the police failed to maintain law and order and to protect citizens during the election. They also cited recent comments on the Judiciary by the NDC Chairman Dr Kwabena Adjei as subversive, serious enough to warrant his invitation and subsequent investigation by the police, but all of which passed without action.Reacting to the demands, Kwesi Ofori said the police were very successful in its handling of the Atiwa by-election.“The police deployed enough personnel to Atiwa to police the by-election, culminating in the successful conduct of the elections.“The main objective of the police was to create the enabling atmosphere in the constituency for a successful conduct of the election and that we achieved.“Rather than blame the police for their woes, what the various political parties need to do is do a serious soul searching. They need to purge themselves of all irresponsible and negative tendencies which are at variance with the tenets of democracy and elections,” he said.He wondered why AFAG was not interested in commenting about the unlawful road-blocks by supporters of the political parties, as well as alleged wielding of weapons by supporters of the political parties. He said however that the police are not investigating any matter related to Dr. Kwabena Adjei. On threats by AFAG that people might take the law into their own hands if the police fail to act, Superintendent Kwasi Ofori warned that the police will deal with persons who flout the laws of the land.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
