The Danish government has assured the Muslim community in Ghana that it does not condone religious intolerance.
Danish Deputy Ambassador to Ghana, Jan Pirouz Poulsen, gave the assurance when he led a delegation to call on the National Chief Imam and some Muslim elders in Accra.
The visit was to afford him a platform to explain his government’s view on a Danish publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed.
The Deputy ambassador told the gathering that the Danish government respects all religious creeds and communities and condemns any attempt to demonise groups of people on the basis of their religion.
The Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu commended the Danish Government for attempting to lessen the damage caused by the publication.
The president of the Coalition of Muslim Organizations-Ghana, COMOG, also urged the Danish government to ensure freedom of expression is not taken for granted.
Major (Retd) Alhaji Mohammed Easah said although Muslim leaders try to put Muslim youth in check, their best might not be enough to calm youth who are ready to defend their faith.
