Residents of Agona Swedru would from next week be able to commute through the town following the completion of one the bridges over River Akora, which collapsed in the June 20 floods.
Mr. Michael Azu, Project Manager of General Development Construction, builders of the bridge, told the Ghana News Agency at Agona Swedru, that the work had been completed ahead of the three months they were given.
“Workers overworked themselves because of the urgency of the project, which started two months ago,” he explained. Mr Azu said when the bridge is opened next week, vehicles would be allowed to ply on it for three weeks to make it compact before it is tarred.
According to the Project Manager, the workers would be shifted to the other bridge at the bye-pass to ensure its early completion too.
On 20th June, the two bridges that pass through the Agona Swedru town were destroyed following continued heavy down pour in the area.
About 12,200 people were rendered homeless as properties were destroyed by the floods. The collapse of the bridges prevented the free-flow of vehicles through the municipality.
The situation also had adverse effects on the socio-economic activities of the residents and their neighbours.
