Some drivers are backing calls on government to send reckless drivers to driving schools for retraining instead of locking them up in prison.
They say a lot of accidents happen because majority of drivers are illiterates. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) put forward the proposal.
An executive member of the drivers’ union at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle bus terminal, Frank Nelson, told Joy News’ Beatrice Aidoo that many accidents on the country’s roads were the result of illiteracy on the part of drivers.
He said the proposal was a laudable one and must be supported.
The Executive Director of the National Roads Safety Commission, Noble Appia, said the proposal had been taken on board.
He said last year a National Drivers’ Academy was established by the Commission to provide refresher courses to help drivers graduate from one level to another.
He also advised GPRTU authorities to find a better way of dealing with the long hours some drivers stay on the road as it remains a major cause of road accidents.
