The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has vowed to get tough on traders who violate bye-laws that clearly prohibit hawking in the capital. The warning comes just a day after a swoop by the AMA’s taskforce to get the traders off the streets, almost resulted in the death of one of the traders. Accra Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije has condemned the hawkers for attacking his men. He told Joy News the AMA will liaise with the police to prosecute traders who fall foul of the law. “If they are resorting to that level of violence, and lawlessness and indiscipline, we will not tolerate that. We will not tolerate that in any form.” He said the city authorities had done so much public education to the extent that street hawkers were well aware of the areas where they could not ply their trade. “We will not allow anybody to use violence or indiscipline to violate the city’s bye-laws,” he stated.
