Wednesday’s heavy downpour in most parts of the country has resulted in a sharp rise in the water levels in the Akosombo Dam.
The water level in the Dam on Wendesday was 275.15 feet but rose sharply after the heavy down pour, to 275.50 feet on Thursday morning.
The Public Relations Officer of the Volta River Authority, Mrs. Gertrude Koomson told Asempa FM that though there has been a sharp rise in the figure by 35 feet, the authority will not rush to open the spill gates until it becomes necessary.
Mrs. Koomson said that the water level in the Dam is being closely monitored to ensure it does not exceed the maximum level of 278 feet.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service has directed District Assembly authorities to make efforts to relocate schools that could be affected by the opening of the spill gates of the Akosombo Dam.
Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Kofi Krampa says the relocation of schools in communities around the Akosombo Dam is the sole responsibility of the District Assemblies and not the Ministry.
Mr. Krampah says this will be done in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization NADMO and where there are problems they can fall on the ministry for any assistance.
