A three-day workshop was on Thursday organised by Project Citizen Ghana (PCG) to train teachers from some tertiary institutions in the Tamale Metropolis. They will in turn train students on how to design policy and ways they could convince government and its agencies for its adoption and implementation. Project Citizen is being implemented in Ghana by the National Commission for Civic Education in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Centre for Civic Education. The Project, which is an interdisciplinary civic education programme, also seeks to train students for qualitative citizenship at the local and national levels and to use public policy to solve community problems. Some of the schools that participated in the workshop include the Bagabaga and Tamale Colleges of Education, Zogbeli, Tiyumba and Kanville JHS. Participants at the workshop were treated to topics such as: “characteristics of effective citizenship, teaching students about public policy and essential elements of public policy formation”. The workshop was sponsored by the Hanns Seidel Stiftung. Madam Fanny Judith Kumah, Project Director, Citizen Ghana said the Project was currently being used to inculcate civic education in schools until it was absorbed by the GES to become part of the school curriculum. Mr Haruna Jaja, another teacher of the Bagaba College of Education, said the workshop had equipped him with the knowledge on better organisation and procedures of getting information from government and public officials and agencies.
