The presidency together with security chiefs have cast doubts on reports of armed robbers forcing the mass rape of passengers aboard a Tamale-bound vehicle two weeks ago. According to Koku Anyidoho, Head of Communications at the Presidency, they are convinced the report was made up. He told Joy News there is no record of armed robbery or rape for the police or security personnel to follow up. A passenger, Amina Mohammed who claimed to have been spared the ordeal of rape because she was menstruating told Adom FM the armed robbers on Wednesday, October 11, pursued their vehicle with motor bikes between 1:00am and 2:00am and forced the vehicle to stop after which they ordered all the passengers to alight from the vehicle. All their belongings, she claimed, were taken from them after which the male passengers were paired with the female counterparts to have sex. She alleged that a man who was taking his 14-or-so year-old girl to school was forced to rape her. She repeated her story on Joy FM on Friday. The incident has provoked widespread condemnations and spurred calls for the police and other security agencies to be up and doing, forcing the president to convene a meeting of security chiefs on Friday to deliberate on the security situation in the country. However, the security chiefs after deliberations suspect the whole incident may well be a hoax. “Very extensive investigation has it that this story is coming more than likely that this is a creation of some people who we don’t know," Koku Anyidoho said. “And so His excellency the president has instructed the police the military and security services to dig into this matter. Whoever or which persons are behind this attempt to disgrace the nation must be brought to book.” “The president is 'red-eyed' on the matter,” he said, adding "this matter will be pursued to its logical conclusion for those who want to destroy this nation, not only be exposed but disciplined appropriately." According to him, the lady in the middle of the report has become a “phantom” but would be smoked out. Corroborating the comments by Koku Anyidoho, the Director of Police Public Relations, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori intimated that his outfit has made strenuous attempts to get the woman who reported the incident to the media to assist with investigations but has been to no avail. Checks at the various police stations close to where the incident is said to have occurred have all proved elusive, he said. According to him, there have been so many inconsistencies in the reports in the media making it difficult for the police to get to the bottom of the matter. He appealed to victims (if any) who claimed to have suffered the ordeal to make themselves available to assist in investigations.
