Some police officers at a town in the Upper East region are said to have been beaten up in a mob attack.
According to witnesses, the officers were overpowered when one of them sought to settle a dispute between some residents of Siniensi, a town near Sandema in the Builsa District and some Fulani herdsmen.
The officers as a result lost four service rifles, a pistol and a mobile accessory in the incident.
The original scuffle is said to have been borne out of residents’ anger at the Fulani herdsmen whom they accuse of raping women in the area and allowing their cattle to destroy their farmlands. The scuffle then led to the death of one Fulani herdsman.
The police officers who were attacked are said to have been dispatched to the village to ensure order.
They however met an angry mob numbering about 80 wielding machetes, sticks, knives and locally manufactured guns among other dangerous weapons. The crowd is said to have gone berserk and pounced on the police officers after a warning shot was fired in an attempt to stop the mob.
Four huts belonging to the Fulani herdsmen were subsequently burnt. The Fulani are said to have since deserted the town.
Upper East police commander Bright Oduro confirmed the incident to Joy News but refused to comment until later today.
Though unrelated, the incident comes on the back of the death of two police officers at the hands of fugitive Justin Kombian in an ambush in the Northern region.
The cop killer meanwhile is said to have fled to Togo from his earlier hideout in Nakpanduri.
