The Minister for Communication and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to members of the Abudu family to reconsider their decision to withdraw from the Dagbon peace talks.
He said it was in the interest of the Abudus to return to the committee of eminent chiefs chaired by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II – tasked with engendering a peace roadmap between the Abudus and Andanis - because history has shown that litigation has failed to solve the Dagbon crisis.
The Abudu family announced on Wednesday they were withdrawing from the peace talks, citing their lost of faith in Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to mediate the age-old chieftaincy crisis.
Meanwhile, rival family Andani has described the action by the Abudus as a betrayal.
Commenting on the development on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Thursday, Mr Haruna Iddrisu explained that the activities of the Asantehene-led Committee only bordered on issues of succession and mediation and, therefore, has nothing to do with criminal prosecutions ongoing at the Supreme Court.
"We must appreciate what the Otumfuo Committee is doing and he should be commended", Mr Iddrisu said, calling on the people of Dagbon to look beyond their rivalry and interests and rather consider the future of their generations.
“As a people, we need to redefine the way we want to go. You don’t want this conflict to damn the future of generations to come,” he added.
The MP also asked the Abudu family to open their defence in the trial since “fair trial is a requirement of the constitution and let the law courts decide what the fate of the people will be.”
Contributing to the discussion, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, stated that he believed there was a strategic miscalculation on the part of the Mills administration when it decided to abandon the manifesto pledge of instituting a presidential commission on the Dagbon crisis and rather going for a straightforward criminal prosecution.
He was surprised that the Asantehene would be described as a dishonest person, saying “I have been convinced over the years that he is an honest broker.”
