The woman behind the mass rape saga, Amina Mohammed will be appearing before a circuit court in Accra on Tuesday to answer charges of publishing false information to cause fear and alarm and deceit of public officer. She was only released from police custody Monday after a Human Rights Court last Friday granted her bail, setting aside a Circuit Court decision. The 24-year old reported of an alleged armed robbery incident involving passengers on a Tamale-bound bus during which she claimed passengers of the opposite sex were forced by the robbers to have sex. The police and government officials say her report is a hoax, leading to her arrest and detention by the police service. The police finally charged her and prayed the court to remand her in custody pending further investigations. The police request was granted by the Circuit Court and remanded her, but the human rights court granted her release on Friday. Explaining why his client was kept in police custody over the weekend, Prof Ken Attafuah noted it was difficult to finish the bail procedures in time for Amina to be released on Friday. “It was not possible for her to be released by the close of business on Friday as a result of the bail documentation procedures which had to be gone through. It entailed for the police to go to the house of the person who was posting bail for her. The person lived quite far away; it took quite a while to get there, (as a result of heavy traffic), get to the police station and then eventually to the court. And it was past 6:30 (pm) and that was impossible. “This morning all of those processes have come to a successful conclusion and Amina Mohammed has been released on bail." He said the accused is fine and commended the police officers at the Nima Police Station for taking good care of her. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
