Water from the spilled Akosombo Dam has inundated homes in the Kwahu North District (Afram Plains), leaving hundreds of people homeless. An assemblyman in the area, Mr. John Atikpoe told Adom fm that over 300 houses had been submerged with about 850 people rendered homeless by the catastrophe. He further stated that residents in the area have been left stranded by the situation, compelling many to sleep under trees while some are even without food. Mr. Atipkpoe said residents have been forced by the situation to cross the Volta Lake just to get polythene sheets to serve as shelter when it rains, and said the situation was being compounded by the presence of mosquitoes. The assemblyman said he had contacted the DCE of the Kwahu North District for help but till date, the Chief Executive had not stepped foot in the area nor heeded his call. "We reported the situation to the district chief executive and he couldn't come…he couldn't even make any effort of coming." The DCE for Kwahu North, Mr. Evans Apraku, reacting to Mr. Atikpoe's allegations stated that he and the Regional Minister have tried their possible best to visit as many affected communities. According to him, some areas are only accessible by boat, adding that it sometimes takes between 10 and 15 hours to get to a desired destination. This, in his estimation, is the reason some communities are yet to be visited. "Even my [Eastern[ Regional Minister [Ofofu Ampofo] was in my district two times within one week.” He said the minister with support from NADMO has been to his assistance, “…Now what it is happening is that some of these communities, traveling on the Lake alone takes 10 to 15 hours…so how can we take 2 or 3 days to visit every area affected?" Mr. Apraku said the situation is beyond the district assembly's capacity to manage and has called for more support from the regional national NADMO offices.
