The Volta River Authority (VRA) has begun preparing an Emergency Preparedness Plan for districts downstream the Kpong dam in case of a major disaster.The VRA has contracted a Dutch Consultancy firm, Royal Haskoning to conduct dam safety and emergency preparedness and environmental management plan for the authority.The exercise coincides with the controlled spillage of water from the dam, raising public interest in the emergency plan.The consultants have identified six districts as the most likely to be affected in an emergency involving the Akosombo or Kpong dams.On Tuesday, the consultants met with the chiefs, security and officials of the Dangme East District at Ada Foah.Joy FM Eastern Regional correspondent, Benjamin Tetteh reports that the VRA per this plan is expected to identify means of communicating emergency issues and to equip residents living close to the boundaries of the Akosombo and Kpong dams with the skills to address those emergencies.He said aerial picture of the various districts and a list of key contacts will be made available at the various district assemblies to help in times of emergencies.Story by Benjamin Tetteh/ Joy FM
