The judge presiding over the Amina Mohammed trial has warned the prosecution that she would be forced to freeze the case if it is not completed by December 20, 2010. Mrs. Justice Patience Mills-Tetteh gave the warning when she granted the prosecution’s request for another adjournment in the trial of Amina Mohammed, who has been charged with causing fear and alarm under Section 208 of the Criminal Code, after reporting an alleged mass rape and robbery of passengers on a Tamale-bound bus by highway robbers. The Police have described the report as a “hoax,” while the driver of the bus on which the alleged gory incident happened has denied any such event occurred. However, some passengers on the bus have confirmed that the said incident did occur. Making the application for an adjournment, the Prosecution, led by Paul Asibi Abarega, told the court they needed more time because their witnesses are scattered all over the country and they all have to be found and brought to Accra. The Prosecution also requested a speedy trial, preferably on a daily basis, to wrap up the case as soon as possible. Counsel for Amina, Ken Attefuah, concurred with the Prosecution’s request for a speedy trial. The 24-year old Amina Mohammed, reported how armed robbers attacked a Tamale bound bus and forced male passengers to have sex with their female counterparts, including a father who was supposedly forced to sleep with his 14 year old daughter. Amina was picked up on Saturday, October 30, by the Police together with the reporter who broke the story on Adom FM to assist in investigations. The reporter was released after several hours of interrogation but Amina was detained and finally charged on Tuesday November 2 for publishing false information to cause fear and panic and deceit of a public official. After initially being denied bail, she was eventually granted bail by a Human Rights Court in Accra on Friday November 5 in the sum of GH¢ 5,000 with one surety. Amina was in court with her lead counsel, Professor Ken Attafuah and Mr. Andy Appiah-Kubi. The case has been adjourned to November 22, 2010. Source: Citifmonline.com
