The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is to send emergency supplies to Ghana valued at $160,000, following floods in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions. The floods, which were triggered by torrential rains and the opening of the Bagre Dam in neighbouring Burkina Faso, have claimed many lives and displaced tens of thousands of people. A statement issued in Accra on Tuesday said supplies to be sent by JICA would include 2,500 blankets, 60 plastic sheets, 1,400 jerry cans and 10 water purifiers. These are to address the most basic needs of the country's most isolated and worst affected villages. The statement said goods would be dispatched from JICA's warehouse in Johannesburg, which holds ready emergency supplies as part of the Japan Disaster Relief system, of which JICA acts as the secretariat.Source: GNA
