Some government officials will today join mass transit buses to mark Public Transport Day. The day is set aside to promote the use of public transportation. Last year a number of ministers surprised Ghanaians by joining commercial vehicles popularly known as trotros from various parts of the capital to their destinations. Transport Minister Mike Hammah told Joy News the experience is to help them learn at first hand, challenges confronting public transportation in Ghana. The minister, who said he will be joining a trotro from Kaneshie to Kasoa, stated that the event will also be used to launch the ‘Arrive Alive’ campaign. Meanwhile, the Road Safety Commission is encouraging the use of public transport as a measure to control traffic congestion in cities. The commission said the increased number of private vehicles is partly to blame for the constant traffic jams. The Director of Planning at the Road Safety Commission, Mrs May Obiri Yeboah said the commission was urging the adoption of best practice. She said the use of public transport will improve the environment because “if less vehicles are on the roads, we have less pollution from exhaust fumes.” Source: Joy News/Ghana
