The Convention People’s Party has suggested that the office of the Inspector General of Police should be scrapped. The party said the IGP centralizes policing and makes it difficult for operational decisions to be taken speedily. The CPP said the IGP’s position should be scrapped and district police chiefs appointed to decentralize policing. The CPP’s Shadow Interior Minister, Mr George Aggudey addressed a news conference in Accra where he made the suggestion. He told Joy News’ Fiifi Koomson, that with power in the hands of district police chiefs, “we could save lives by taking immediate decisions on the spot where the action actually is.”According to him, there should be a Metropolitan Police Commission in each of the 10 administrative regions in the country to co-ordinate the activities of officers fighting crime.Mr Aggudey blamed successive governments for the precarious security situation prevailing in the country and also accused them of paying lip service to needs and resource constraints of the security agencies.“The governments of this country always find money for the benefit of their own personnel – their friends, cronies and what not – but they are not able to find money to support the Police Service and other agencies as they should do, for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” he charged.Mr Aggudey promised a CPP government will adequately resource the security agencies to boost their effectiveness in crime prevention.Source: Joy News/Ghana
