A pressure group based in the Northern region, the Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy, has criticized the budgetary allocations made by government for the implementation of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority.
Government had promised some 200 million cedis as seed money as well as 100 million cedis annually for investment in the area.
NOPRA spokesperson, Bismark Adongo told Joy News that in spite of this promise which was captured in the NDC’s manifesto for elections 2008, the government, in 2009 claimed the economy was in shambles and that it was unable to provide for GH¢200 million seed money.
The government in the 2010 budget provided for GH¢25 million for SADA and in the 2011 budget has allocated same amount but NOPRA says the government has given the people of the north a raw deal.
“Government has made it public that as a result of prudent management of the economy, the economy has recorded an unprecedented GDP of GH¢44.8 billion, making Ghana [attain] Middle Income [status], showing that the economy is resilient, the economy is sound, the economy is vibrant and yet they have failed to honour their promises to people of Northern Ghana,” he stated.
Mr Adongo said NOPRA was asking for an explanation from the government as to why it is reneging on its promise to the people.
Mr. Adongo is cautioning that the limited allocation of resources to SADA will slow down efforts to improve the quality of life for people in Northern Ghana.
