Justice Francis Emile Short, head of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), which was petitioned to investigate allegations of abuse of office charges leveled against the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has explained that his outfit is not aware of any evidence that was rejected because it had the potential of implicating the former minister. He indicated that when such proceedings are on going, the commission receives a lot of evidence, some of which are relevant and others not vital to the case in point, adding he is unable to answer the question as he cannot recall throwing out such an evidence. Justice Short who was speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM Wednesday morning, explained why the commission exonerated Alhaji Muntaka after its investigations into his alleged abuse of office. He said during the investigations, the complainants withdrew all the allegations leaving the charge on abuse of office where the minister was accused of fraudulently acquiring a visa for a lady at the centre of the controversy. He explained that the complainants pulled back the other allegations with the explanation that they could not get the two witnesses on whom they were relying to prove those allegations. “CHRAJ did not have evidence to prove the allegations. There is no way we can confirm that allegation. There is nothing we can do about it. How do we proceed to confirm that she was his girlfriend? What steps can we take to confirm that allegation?” he queried. He said the commission received evidence to show that the letter requesting for a visa for the lady was written by “one Mr. Ben Ato who was with the Ministry and this was his duty to acquire visas for everybody who was on the delegation. Now the minister did not see that letter, the minister did not write the letter nor was he aware of the content of that letter.” Justice Short pointed out that the content of the letter was not referred to him and that whatever was in that letter could not be imputed to Alhaji Muntaka. CHRAJ cleared Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed of allegations of abuse of office and conflict of interest on Tuesday. Story by Derick Romeo Adogla/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
