The National Identification Authority (NIA) will begin the issuance of National Identification Cards also known as “ghanacard” for residents of Greater Accra region from January 2011. Available statistics indicate that the Greater Accra Region recorded 3,205,611 out of estimated 3,469,983 representing 87.50 percent. The ghanacard is a national identity card to be issued by the NIA, which bears personal information about the individual whose identity can be verified at all times. It is a national initiative by the Government of Ghana aimed at providing the public with added convenience and ease when conducting transactions with government and public sector institutions, civil society organizations and private sector businesses. Speaking on Adom FM’s midday news, Miss Bertha Dzeble, Head of Public Affairs of the NIA said mass production of National Identification Cards will begin from Monday, December 6, but distribution will start next year. According to her, the Authority has completed installation of technical equipment, recruitment and training of operational staff for the smooth run of the programme. She added that the mass registration exercise is a continuous process and that registration of residents in the Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper West and Upper East Regions will begin next year. Miss Dzeble noted that an applicant would have to validate his or her registration by submitting a slip issued during the registration exercise and fingerprints must correspond with those stored on the card before it would be issued. “It is estimated by the Authority that about 2.4 million people will receive their identification cards next year”. She added The mass registration exercises embarked upon between July 2008 and May 2010 registered a total of 11,978,327 people out of the estimated population of 14,216,221 representing 84.26 per cent for six regions - Greater Accra, Eastern, Volta, Central, Western and Ashanti.
