A state funeral will be held in Accra this Friday for the six Ghanaians among 44 foreigners killed in The Gambia five years ago.The Foreign Ministry hopes the burial will bring to rest issues related to the incident, which occurred on the 23rd of July 2005.Foreign Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni told Joy News although eight bodies were brought to Ghana, so far only six have been identified as Ghanaians.Alhaji Mumuni said a number of Ghanaians who were also traveling with their murdered colleagues have not been accounted for.He said family members who are supportive of the funeral have agreed they should be declared dead.Alhaji Mumuni said the compensation of 500,000 dollars from the Gambian government will be disbursed appropriately by the end of this year.The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative which was instrumental in pushing government to demand justice from the Gambian government welcomed the news but maintained that the compensation is woefully inadequate.Programme Officer at the Access for Justice Desk of CHRI, Mina Mensah said the family members have agreed that anybody who can prove that their relative was a victim of the incident in The Gambia should be entitled to some compensation.Source: Joy News/Ghana
