Beginning January next year, landlords and tenants who illegally enjoy electricity power will be prosecuted at a special court.
Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana Cephas Gakpo who disclosed this at a media interaction last night said the court has already been established by the Chief Justice.
Mr. Gakpo said Judges are currently being trained on laws on energy theft in order to properly hear the cases.
This he noted, is one of several measures being considered to minimise the losses the power company incurs.
Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana says effective January next year, applicants of separate electricity meters would have to get clearance from their landlords before their applications will be granted.
This according to the ECG is to avoid situations where the tenants leave behind unpaid bills for using the electricity service.
There are concerns however that this directive could create conflicts between some landlords and their tenants as some could deliberately refuse to grant such a permission in order to spite the tenants.
However, the ECG's Director in charge of Customer Service, Dr. Smart-Yaboah says the company has put adequate measures in place to address such conflicts when they come up.
He says currently the nation does not have a national addressing policy to enable them trace their customers and that this has necessitated the use of very difficult strategies to locate some customers.
In a related development, the unstable power situation in Dansoman and its environs is to continue until the current impasse between the youth of the area and the Electricity Company of Ghana is resolved.
The youth of the area are said to have resisted the contractor engaged to build a sub-station on a parcel of land the ECG says it duly acquired and paid for.
The contract which was awarded in January 2009 was scheduled to be completed by this December. However the resistance being put up by the youth has delayed the project which has not taken off yet.
Dr. Smart-Yeboah told Asempa News the ECG purchased the parcel of land at Kakari-Brobbey from the State Housing Corporation for the construction of the sub-station to improve the power situation there.
He says his outfit has called on the Member of Parliament for the area Fritz Baffuor and the Mayor of Accra Dr. Alfred Vanderpuye for their intervention for the smooth take-off of the project which has already delayed.
