Former Interior Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah has denied recent media publications which accuse him of frustrating efforts by the Narcotics Control Board in its anti-drug smuggling crusade during the erstwhile NPP administration. Details of confidential United States (US) cables published recently by whistle-blowing website, WikiLeaks, cited Mr Kan-Dapaah as having acted in various ways that impeded the fight against drug barons operating along the coast of the sub-region. The publications quoted a foreign diplomat as having found Hon Kan-Dapaah “dismissive” and “irritated” when he raised problems with narcotics at the Kotoka International Airport. However, speaking on the Citi Breakfast show on Monday, Mr. Kan-Dapaah, said the details of the cables were misleading. “Those who know me, know that it is not my style to be dismissive and irritated in official discussions but I do make my point very straight forward but if his interpretation was that my strong reaction amounted to being irritated and dismissive that is his interpretation but it doesn’t take anything away from the strong points that I made to rebut his allegations.” Details of the leaks also accuse the erstwhile NPP government of lacking the political will to fight the drug menace in Ghana during the last two years of its regime. The cables quoted US Embassy contacts in the Police Service and the President's office as having revealed that they knew the identities of the major drug barons, but the government of Ghana did not have the political will to pursue them. But, Mr Kan-Dapaah, denies the allegations, saying the NPP government did everything humanly possible to curtail the drug menace. “Saying that we didn’t have the political will, I deny that. We had the will, we were determined to do it and we did our best under the circumstances. “It is a difficult situation because you are dealing with people who have all the resources to outwit all your strategies and it is generally accepted that it is a very difficult thing to control these drug barons but we did our best.” Source: Citifmonline
