Gender activists in the country may have to redefine their strategy to ensure that middle class educated women are emboldened to report domestic abuses they suffer.
Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, an avid anti domestic violence advocate herself, concedes the campaign has not reached such women.
It follows concerns by the National Coalition on Domestic Violence Legislation that the campaign over the years has focused only on less educated women, to the detriment of the educated ones.
According to the coordinator of the coalition, such women almost never share their stories because of the fear of stigmatization.
Madam Dwamena-Aboagye agreed and said prevention is the best option.
“Sometimes there is this mistaken belief that if you are educated then you are empowered,” but that is not always the case.
She said middle class women must be able to identify signs of abusive relationships and take measures to resist the violence perpetrated against them.
