Ten communities around Tsime and Keta-Avu lagoon in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have been invaded by worms.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa News, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area Sylvester Tornyeavah said the worms invasion has seriously affected economic activities in the areas.
He added the only source of drinking water has also been polluted by the worms.
Over 10,000 residents are said to be victims of the invasion.
Mr. Tornyeavah said the Assembly has officially informed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Disease Control Unit of Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture who have visited the areas but are yet to find a solution to the problem.
According to the MCE, five years ago the same incident happened in the municipality which even resulted in 5 deaths but this time round the Assembly has put measures in place especially regarding the only source of drinking water that has been polluted by the worms.
Currently the assembly is supplying people in the affected areas water to reduce the intake of the polluted one, as it can lead to running stomach and other sicknesses.
Mr. Tornyeavah said no deaths have been recorded this year and hoped the people there will adhere to safety advice to control the disease.
The Municipal NADMO Officer, Alex Attaapa hinted that the organization is planning to get the affected people some food stuffs and clothes, as the farmers are finding it difficult to go to their farm.
Asempa News asked whether there will be any form of spraying but Mr. Attaapa responded in the negative saying that “NADMO is facing problems with logistics, we don’t have vehicles for movements. We only use motorbikes and this has been hindering our activities in the municipality” he noted.
According to Mr. Attaapa, NADMO has officially contacted the Environmental Protection Agency which is planning to spray the affected areas.
