The police in Tamale have arrested four persons believed to be activists of the National Democratic Congress for obstructing an exercise to clamp down on motor traffic offences.
The exercise was at the instance of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, who instructed the police to step up their game in the enforcement of traffic regulations in a bid to check rampant road accidents.
But Northern Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, said the police started the exercise and arrested one traffic offender, three young men came to the station and tried to prevent the police from processing the suspect.
He said when the three became violent, they were arrested and placed at the counter-back but many more residents besieged the police station demanded the unconditional release of the four suspects, promising dire consequences for the police if they failed to comply with the demands.
“They were using foul language so the Regional [Police] Commander and others had to come in [to calm tempers], he said.
Chief Inspector Tetteh said a gentleman who said he was branch secretary of the NDC at Nyohini, a suburb of Tamale, also intervened and calmed the grouped.
A meeting was called to resolve the stand-off.
