A 21-year-old mason who sent a nine-year-old girl on an errand and defiled her afterwards was on Tuesday sentenced to eight years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Accra. Kwaku Addo pleaded not guilty to defilement. However, the court, presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa, found him guilty and convicted him. When the court asked him whether he had something to say before judgment was pronounced Addo said; "I don't have anything to say." Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said the victim and Addo resided in the same area. ASP Acquah said at about 1800 hours on July 23, last year, the complainant, who is a priest residing at Amasaman, sent the victim on an errand. While on her way back, Addo, who was working in an uncompleted building near the victim's house invited her into the building and asked her to buy him water and gari. According to the prosecutor when the victim returned and handed over the items, Opoku lured her into one of the rooms and defiled her. The prosecutor said after the act, the victim ran home and informed her parents about her ordeal. The complainant therefore reported the matter to the Police and the accused was arrested. During interrogation, the prosecutor said Addo admitted the offence and took the police to the crime scene. The prosecutor said a police medical form was therefore issued to the victim and the complainant sent her to the hospital for examination. Addo was charged based on the medical report. Source: GNA
