The Government of Ghana says it has not changed its position about the use of military force to oust embattled Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo.
At a recent interaction with senior journalists, President Mills indicated that Ghana was unable to contribute troops towards a proposal by ECOWAS for a possible military intervention in the Ivorian crisis.
He was heavily criticized for breaking diplomatic ranks with his colleagues in the sub-region.
Following the comments, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga Yesterday met President Mills to clarify his stance and to clear all ambiguities.
The president, according to Mr Odinga said he supports any ECOWAS action – including military action – to remove Mr Gbagbo.
Some have said the president’s stance on Ivory Coast is at best inconsistent, and at worst, confused.
But Director of Communications at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho says there has not been any ambiguity and inconsistency.
“There is no incongruity in the president’s position when he met senior editors here and the position that he put out when he met Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” he said.
According to Mr Anyidoho, all the president did was to restate his commitment to supporting measures taken by ECOWAS to resolve the crisis but repeated his stance that Ghana is not able to contribute troops the effort.
Meanwhile security analyst Emmanuel Sowatey agrees with the stance taken by President Mills.
He however said the use of Raila Odinga as an ECOWAS envoy to resolve the Ivorian crisis is a wrong choice.
Mr Sowatey said Mr Odinga had made public pronouncements that showed clearly he had taken sides in the conflict – a situation that made him an unsuitable mediator.
In his view, Mr Odinga’s efforts were simply a waste of resources.
