Simon Atta Kyei, a farmer and an ex-convict who assaulted his mother and brother and threatened to kill the mother, was on Wednesday sentenced to two years in prison in hard labour by the Kade District Magistrate's Court presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu. The prosecution said Kyei threatened to cut off the head of the mother, Mad Sophia Atimah. He pleaded guilty with explanation. Police Chief Inspector J. Y. Cromwell said Sophia lived at Pramkese while the second complainant, Samuel Boadu, who is also her son, lived at Kade. He said Kyei also lived at Pramkese and last December 13 Boadu travelled to Pramkese to harvest the mother's palm fruits. While in the house a misunderstanding ensued between Boadu and Kyei and he head butted Boadu who sustained injury on the forehead. The mother went for ointment to rub it on Boadu's forehead but Kyei picked a pestle and hit the back of the mother who fell down. Kyei threatened to cut off the head of the mother. The mother and son reported the incident to the police who issued them with medical forms to attend Pramkese Health Centre where they were treated. On December 14, the mother sent to the police a pair of trousers Kyei was wearing when the incident happened and in one of the pockets was a match box and a wrapped paper containing a substance was found in it. The items were shown to Kyei who was in police cell and he admitted they belonged to him and pleaded for mercy. The prosecutor said Kyei admitted in court that he assaulted both his mother and brother and also threatened to cut off the mother's head and pleaded for leniency. The judge said Kyei's explanation was a prima facie confession of the offences preferred against him and convicted him accordingly. In his plea for mitigation of sentence, Kyei said he was sorry and having spoken the truth and as God forgave those who confessed he should also be forgiven. When the prosecutor told the court that Kyei was an ex-convict he said it was true and that he served 10 years in Nsawam Prisons. Source: GNA
